Multimedia Walkthrough

Today I felt inspired to create a multimedia painting that I really love. I don't paint macabre or horror pieces as often as I used to but I enjoy making them! The piece featured in this post is a prototype design of an original clown character I created named Patchie.
Below, I am going to explain the steps I take to make a full multimedia work of art.
1. Firstly, I draw a sketch of what I want the general painting to look like in pencil. I try to leave out as many details as I can so I can incorporate them in with paint. All I want in this stage is for the subject to be obvious.
2. Next, I add the first layer of watercolor paint. This helps me create visual boundaries between objects while also determining my color scheme. (This used to be my least favorite step because it looks so unfinished!)
3. Then, I add shading and depth with the watercolor paint and start putting in finer details.
4. For this painting I wanted to incorporate bloody details. I created the color of blood through acrylic paints. I diluted some of the red with water and kept some as thick acrylic to build texture.
5. After that, I painted the majority of the background black with acrylic and blended some of the blood red with it to create depth. (Plus I rarely paint blood anymore so I went a little wild with it!)
6. And lastly, I outlined the subject and major details in black Japanese sumi ink. The contrast of the black against some of the muted colors makes them pop which was my goal since I was working with a limited color scheme.
I go through similar steps of creation no matter what art I'm working on, but I thought that this multimedia painting of Patchie was the best way to showcase what I do.
